Ok, enough with being cynical. It may be momentary, I’ve not had a complete personality transplant, but I’ve decided it’s time. Time to be grateful, time to acknowledge how lucky I am to be here. I’m still not buying a flag; there are limits, but I do love Canada. I will hereby set out to never be sarcastic. Ok, let’s change that to contemptuous. I will never be contemptuous.
Canada is far from perfect, but we are not run by a violent extremist. We have no Benjamin Netanyahu. We have no Donald Trump. We don’t have prison camps where people are tortured, we don’t promise food and then shoot those who turn up. We are not a police state, and we have not set out to dismantle democracy. Here, political leaders follow the law.
We only have fires and droughts, artificial intelligence, long healthcare wait lists, houses few can afford, and perhaps an increased tax to cover the megabucks we’ve promised to spend on our military. Promises that we actually keep. Gush gush. (The cynicism is not entirely gone, it’s been replaced by a sorry attempt at humour.)
