This could be a momentous week for our town and country. By press time, we will have elected a new government. Even if it’s the same one that’s been in power for the last month or so, it will be led by an elected official, so that’s something. Or maybe there will be an upset. I don’t know. I’m writing this in the recent past, and you’re reading it in the future. How IS the future? Do we have flying cars yet? They said there’d be flying cars.
It’s also a nail biter of a week for Canadian hockey fans. We have 5 teams in the playoffs, with the Maple Leafs poised to win their first playoff round in a quarter century. Or not. Toronto is no stranger to heartbreak. We might have won the World Series twice, and the NBA championship once, but until the Stanley Cup is reclaimed after a 57 year draught we will remain inconsolable. Honestly, I’d settle for a Canadian win. It’s been over 30 years since the Habs took it home. Neither of my children has witnessed a major hockey victory in their own country. If they had, wouldn’t they walk taller and see the world as a better place? Is this the root of our restless discontent? When will this long national nightmare ever be over?
